...but I package my pieces so well and I've never had a mishap.
...My main question is this:
If I package a piece really well, but I don't insure it, and the piece arrives damaged (with obvious neglect by the handler -- ie. crushed box)... isn't USPS still responsible?
another way to put it:
will USPS compensate for an item that is not insured if there is obvious neglect involved in shipping?
Overall, I'm really happy with the USPS ... I'm just thinking of this hypothetical (and probably imminent, if I keep at this long enough) situation. :)
Thanks for your time.

Good question, I've never considered what would happen if it's blatant neglect by the USPS. I'm leaning toward that the point of insurance is for those cases where random packages get damaged by USPS machines, etc. and if a package isn't insured the USPS doesn't cover it.

Short answer---NO.
I hate usps insurance. They fight tooth and nail to NOT pay claims.
For peace of mind, I insure valuable items through u-pic.com.

depends on what you are shipping imo
and whether or not you can re-create it?
I make one of a kind items but at relatively inexpensive prices but if I made a one of a kind item say over $200 bucks or so...yeah I'd insure it....
a one of a kind $10 dollar item...not so much...

I insure anything over $50.
I have never had a problem with USPS. But I do it just incase of loss.
It's not much, around $1.50.

Treasure, have you had to make a claim with u-pic.com since using them? And if so, what kind of proof of sale do you need for them?

pretty much the same here any thing over a certain time to recreate or cost number and I insure. I did pitch a fit at ups once and got a full refund but that was like pulling teeth.
